The new Warsaw West interchange replaces a fragmented mid-century station with a unified transport hub linking intercity rail, metro, tram and bus networks under a single dramatic roof. The structure is defined by a series of laminated timber arches spanning 64 metres across all six platforms, their warmth deliberately chosen to counteract the institutional coldness traditionally associated with transit infrastructure. Natural light filters through a continuous skylight running the full length of the concourse, eliminating the need for artificial illumination during daylight hours and creating a quality of space closer to a public garden than a waiting hall.
Passenger flows were modelled using real-time data from the existing station, resulting in a level-free concourse that routes commuters, intercity travellers and cyclists without conflict. A dedicated cycling hall with 800 secure spaces and a repair workshop signals the city’s commitment to multimodal mobility. The station is certified BREEAM Excellent and is projected to serve 85,000 passengers daily by 2030.
